Powerful Words – Powerful Act

Mat 26:26-28  Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”  And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

When the disciples originally heard these words, I can imagine the power that they held and the questions that arose.  They were living in the moment and many did not fully if at all, understand what Jesus was saying but they did later.

We have the advantage of looking back at this event and hearing these words through different filters, filters that help us to understand because we know and can know the story.  Even with this advantage, these words must be just as powerful and free for us today.

“Take, eat; this is my body.”  And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”  As we participate in this meal, we are remembering this act of Jesus and we are participating now in the forgiveness and new life that He offers each day.

We are forgiven through the broken body and shed blood of Jesus.  Very powerful words because they point to a very powerful act of love on our behalf.
